The Next Chapter | Becoming a Full-Time Wedding Photographer

Business, Personal

Most of you know that for the entire time I’ve been a photographer, I’ve always also had a full-time job that had nothing to do with photography. I’ve worked at a biotech company and an art and design college in their communications departments, and I actually have an English degree from the University of Florida. Photography has been my part-time, midnight hustle for what feels like my whole life…
I was 22 when I bought my first DSLR, a Canon Rebel XT.

I was 23 when my then-boyfriend told me I had an eye for photography and encouraged me to start a photo-a-day blog that I called Lifestill Photography.

I was 24 when a co-worker finally convinced me to take her maternity pictures–my first photo shoot with an actual person in it!

I was 24 when I second-shot my first wedding EVER, changed my blog/business name to Anwen Elizabeth Photography, and got my first business cards.

I was 25 when I booked my first wedding as the lead photographer and bought my first full-frame camera, the 5D Mark II.

I was 26 when I got so burned out from working full-time and shooting part-time that I took almost a whole year off from photography.

I was 27 when I moved to Savannah and fell back in love with photography while second-shooting over 20 weddings in a year.

I was 28 when I rebranded my business to Apt. B Photography and booked my first wedding as a wedding photographer in Savannah.

7 years, 3 business names, and 2 cities later…

I’m 29, and I just put in my two weeks notice at my full-time job. The part-time hustle is done, and I am officially becoming a full-time wedding photographer. Yes, FOR REAL!!!

I barely have words for what I’m feeling right now. Excited. Scared. Happy. Terrified. Proud.

And ready. I am so READY for this next chapter in my life. I’m ready to see what Apt. B can become now that it will be my main focus, and I’m ready to tackle all of the challenges in store for me head on.

I must end this post on an extra sappy note, because I just have to say the biggest THANK YOU to every single person who believed I could do it all these years. The clients who trusted me with their family photos back when I barely knew how to use my camera, and the clients who trust me now with the most important days in their lives. My family who never got tired of hearing my excitement over the next shoot I booked and or listening to my tears when I thought it was just too hard to keep going. And my friends who were my biggest cheerleaders–all the lovely, wonderful human beings who patiently stuck with me when I was too busy or too stressed or too whatever. I truly would NOT be where I am today without every single one of you, so thank you. From the bottom of my heart. You are all part of the Apt. B family, forever and always. <3

Congrats!!! I know that feeling…pretty much exactly three years ago I gave my notice to my corporate bank employer and left for Costa Rica. Somewhere in between I started pursuing one of my passions as a child, photography. Relish this moment because there is nothing quite like it!
    Pura Vida,

P.S. I found your beautiful work via the Jasmine Star 30 Day Photographer Experience FB group…my parents are located in Savannah as well and if you are available when I am in town over the Holidays I would love to grab a cup of coffee with you! 🙂

Hi Kristen! Thank you so much for the encouraging comment!! It’s great to hear other people’s success stories–makes me feel even more confident making the leap! That’s amazing you live in Costa Rica. I’ve been there twice and have fallen completely in love with that country. I would love to grab coffee while you are in town! What dates will you be here? Shoot me an email at and we’ll try to make it happen! 🙂
